Dr. Thomas Vesz Endodontist
You have been told that you need either root canal treatment or retreatment. In some instances when root canal has already been performed, you may have been told that surgery is required. What does this all mean? Why do you need a specialist?
What is Endodontics?
Root canal treatment involves removing dead or damaged nerves or blood vessels (the "pulp") from within the root of a tooth that has been irritated by decay, cracks or trauma to the tooth. The root itself is not removed, only the pulp tissue within the root is. Once this is done, the space left behind is filled so that the canal is sealed. The tooth then continues to function the way it did before the problem arose. In the case of retreatment, where a root canal has been done before but is failing, the old root canal filling is removed, the canal is re-cleaned and then re-filled with new filling material.
Sometimes surgery on the root end is performed through an incision in the gum when retreatment is not possible or otherwise is not indicated. We would be happy to discuss what is most appropriate for you.
Why a Specialist?
Your dentist may not feel comfortable undertaking this treatment. The treatment may be difficult so your dentist may therefore decide to send you to an Endodontist. Because an Endodontist is a dentist who has received additional post-graduate training of at least 2 years, the Endodontist has special skills often necessary to diagnose or complete the treatment required. Endodontists also have highly specialized equipment such as operating microscopes that help in treatment. The specialist is therefore asked to provide treatment quickly and successfully so that the patient can get back to routine dental care.
